# Edit a Merge field in Word (Windows only)

If you wish to change the contents of a merge field you must make sure that you change the contents of the field, not just the displayed value. If you edit the text of the merge field within the body of the document you are not actually updating the syntax.

**In order to edit the merge field you must right-click the field and select Edit Field.**

Selecting this option will take you back to the merge field dialog and you can make the necessary changes in the Field name box. Click OK to save the changes.
